A trip down homebrew lane – DosBox PSP

$
0
0

DosBox is probably one of the most-remembered homebrew on PSP, not because of functionality but because of the coolness factor. This homebrew not only allowed you to play your favourite DOS games but also run Windows 9x/ME!

What is DosBox?

Dosbox is an open-source DOS emulator that’s been ported to countless systems including the Raspbery Pi and OpenPandora amongst others. You can play a whole library of old games and since there’s keyboard and mouse support on the PSP version, almost anything can open. What can be played however, is another story.

A bit about the PSP version

The PSP version is a port of version 0.71 which isn’t too old as the latest version is only 0.74. DosBox didn’t run too well and it could only emulate some less demanding games at lower resolutions.

Windows 95

Windows 95 on PSP via DosBox. You can even play Minesweeper!

It had the following issues:

  • 640×480 looked stretched on the PSP (4:3)
  • Speed wasn’t anything to be proud of
  • Keyboard input was pretty annoying (even with keyhint in later versions)
  • Mounted hard disk images didn’t allow you to save to them

What it had going for it:

  • Decent support for older games (such as Commander Keen)
  • Mouse support
  • Ability to map PSP buttons to keyboard keys with a text editor
  • Cool factor (come on, playing DOS games on the go back then was quite cool)

Commander Keen 4

Commander Keen 4

The homebrew ought to have caught your attention if you were interested in any type of homebrew back then. Something that many of us have tried is running Windows 95/98 on their PSP. While it’s pretty cool and definitely doable, it’s almost useless because peformance is quite awful and not much runs. Windows 3.1 fares better but you still can’t save to disk..

Conclusion

This was quite a decent homebrew that some us spent quite a lot of time on. While not the best PSP homebrew, it’s still an interesting find and it’s the only way to run DosBox on the PSVita. DosBox for PSP works on the Vita, both on VHBL and Adrenaline. There’s a RetroArch version that doesn’t support keyboard input.. yet.

Thanks to developer “CrazyC” for this homebrew

ARK for 3.60 released – Also works on 3.61/3

$

ARK for 3.60 has been released! Now, you might say, “Oh, isn’t there Adrenaline already?”. You’d be right but ARK has some advantages over Adrenaline (and some disadvantages).

What’s ARK?

ARK is a cross between VHBL and a full eCFW. You don’t get the PSP’s XMB but you can still play PSP games unlike VHBL. You get a VHBL-esque file manager but you can execute EBOOT.PBP files without having to convert them to a strange VHBL format. ARK for 3.60 has been ported by fellow developer “qwikrazor87” who mentioned that he was going to port it before Adrenaline landed.

Why use ARK?

ARK has a series of somewhat subtle advantages over Adrenaline:

  • Ability to run on 3.61/3 (If you have someone to give you a copy or you already have VHBL, or if it’s already installed) (Update: VHBL does not have write access to PSP/GAME so the reports of VHBL enabling this are believed to be inaccurate)
  • Can run when taiHEN is on too (Adrenaline doesn’t override it)
  • Ability to run without having taiHEN enabled
  • Can run some games Adrenaline can’t (such as the English patched Project Diva 2nd)
  • Should be able to play PS1 ISOs (games) WITHOUT sound (as per online user reports)

These advantages allow lazy folks, like me, who don’t feel like installing taiHEN to play PSP games a la VHBL. It also allows those who have 3.61/3 to play PSP games as it’s a kxploit unlike Adrenaline but like VHBL.

The disadvantages of ARK

As previously discussed, ARK has some advantages but it also has some disadvantages. These are:

  • Lack of custom filter suport a la Adrenaline
  • No PSP XMB or plugins
  • No support claims as Adrenaline is still in development
  • Lack of native savestates like those that will be supported in Adrenaline in the future

The disadvantages may be deal breakers for some but ARK is still pretty decent. It’s important to note that you can still use ARK even if you have Adrenaline installed so you don’t need to worry about that.

Conclusion

ARK is a pretty interesting piece of homebrew that, sadly, has limited appeal. While it has some advantages such as letting the user use it without installing taiHEN, it came a tad late to the game. The only real thing that will keep this release alive is probably 3.61/3 support and lazy people, like yours truly, who don’t wanna be bothered to load taiHEN everytime. On a concluding note, it’s important to note that the community is very grateful to the developer “qwikrazor87” for his awesome work!

Adrenaline Easy Installer v1.05 released – New features + bug fixes

$

0

Adrenaline Easy Installer has been with us for quite some time and as with most popular homebrew, issues were found. Developer ‘Freakler’ who is a regular contributor to the Vita scene has updated his homebrew to version 1.05 today.

What’s Adrenaline Easy Installer?

This homebrew is quite straightforward, it simply installs Adrenaline on your PSVita system for the most part. Installing Adrenaline may be a tad tedious especially if you’re a beginner so this software makes your life much easier. With the installer, you may also uninstall Adrenaline (should you need to do it) and you can install a cool theme for the bubble you used with Adrenaline. It’s important to note that while developer ‘Freakler’ created the installer, developer ‘TheFlow’ developed Adrenaline so make sure not to ask questions to the wrong guy.

Bubble Theme that you may install

What changed?

The 1.04 and 1.05 update bring about various bug fixes and improvements which are listed here:

  • Bugs with incorrect taiconfig files and other bugs are now fixed
  • When you select which PSP game you want to use, you can now see its name
  • ePSP bubble installer is integrated into this homebrew (thanks to developer ‘CelesteBlue’) so you can install a small ePSP base game
  • You may delete the adrenaline install files and other non needed files
  • A progress bar can now be seen when downloading the 6.61 files needed for Adrenaline to install
  • You may no longer exit with the HOME button while installing Adrenaline

The list of improvements make the homebrew much more bug free and easy to use so messing up is now quite hard. You simply need to install the VPK and follow the on-screen instructions to install Adrenaline. Activation can now be done via ePSP Bubble Installer 2.0 so Adrenaline can be install on virtually any 3.60 Vita/PSTV.

ARK QuickBoot – Load PSP games directly from your LiveArea

Developer qwikrazor87 never fails to amaze us; first he ports ARK to 3.60 and it even works on 3.61/3.63 and now this. ARK QuickBoot lets you to have PSP game bubbles on your Vita’s LiveArea screen.

What’s ARK QuickBoot?

This mod allows you to simply point ARK to the game you wish to play without having to open the ARK shell. It uses PBOOT explotation like ARK itself uses along with a file that lets you specify the path you wish to use with the bubble. You may start PSP games, homebrew and PSX games (No sound of course) via this bubble mod. After you copy the PBOOT.PBP file to the exploit game and the savepath.txt file, you must backup and restore the exploit game. It’s important to note that you can infact dupe ePSP bubbles since this will require various bubbles for various games!

Instructions for ARK QuickBoot

The instructions are quite straightforward and they’re found on a /talk forums thread by ‘qwikrazor87’. In a nutshell, you have to copy the PBOOT, set the path of what you want and restore/backup via QCMA. You may also update the title for the PBOOT and its icon. You also have to do a folder for every different bubble that contains the ARK bin with QuickBoot support.

ARK FAST FOR 3.60 – GekiHEN contest

Yet another installer for ARK, this time by ONEluaTeam. This installer makes the installation even simpler since the UI is pretty easy to use.

What’s this homebrew?

As the title suggests, it’s a very easy way to install ARK-2 on your PSVita provided it’s on FW 3.60. This homebrew incorporates ‘ePSP Bubble Installer’ so you don’t even need a base PSP game to use it as it takes care of that for you. If you use the PSP game that’s installed via ePSP Bubble Installer, this homebrew takes care of duplicating that for you so you really don’t need to do any work in order to have both ARK and Adrenaline on your system. Installation is pretty straightforward as this homebew gives you very simple to follow instructions you may follow on-screen. You get a very userfriendly interface written in ONElua so you don’t need to worry about messing up anything.

Easy bubble cloning

How do I get it?

All you need are the following:

  • A PSVita/PSTV on 3.60 (this needs HENkaku ofcourse – you may backup the game afterwards for use on 3.61+)
  • A computer or something to get the VPK on your PSVita/PSTV
  • A bit of common sense

You simply need to go to the GekiHEN contest link at the bottom of this article, download the VPK, transfer to your Vita and install it via VitaShell. Make sure you get it from the official GekiHEN link (or other trustworthy site) as some VPKs have contained malware in the past. This is as simple as it gets so we needn’t have more easy installers.. please!

Current state of portable consoles emulation on the PSVita – March 2017

$

0

The PSP and its successor, the PSVita, are both great consoles that are quite hackable nowadays and without a doubt, they shine in emulating similar consoles. Both consoles have a very decent control scheme which makes playing games for other portable consoles a breeze. Without a doubt, in order to do this, you must run an emulator so this article will tell you about what’s out there!

N.B: Portable consoles are usually a generation before home consoles so generations will be sorted as per home console counterparts! Only the most popular consoles will be featured. Cores mean RetroArch cores

4th Generation

  • Gameboy: This doesn’t require very powerful hardware so emulating on the Vita should be a breeze. mGBA 0.5+ and the Gamebette/TGBDual cores should get the job done. RealBoy can also do the job (HENkaku show

Pokemon on Sega Consoles 😉 (Gameboy)

    case)

  • Sega Game Gear: You may use SMSplusVita (which you can find in the HENKaku showcase page) to emulate this system.
  • Atari Lynx: You may use the ‘Handy’ core of RetroArch or the HandyVITA emulator.

5th Generation

Various obscure portable and home consoles are part of this era so don’t expect a Game Com emulator on your Vita!

  • Gameboy Colour: Quite a popular console that isn’t too far away from a Gameboy with colour capabilities. You may use mGBA 0.5+ or the Gambette/TGBDual RetroArch cores. RealBoy can also do the job (HENkaku showcase)
  • Neo Geo Pocket: You may emulate this with MednaFen which is a RetroArch core. This core is available in various versions so you must choose the ‘ngp’ version of it.
  • WonderSwan/Colour: You may use the MednaFen ‘wswan’ core for this. WonderSwan Colour games may run slowly but your mileage may vary greatly. It’s not the same fro all games.

One Piece – Grand Battle (WonderSwan Colour)

6th Generation

  • Gameboy Advance: This is most probably the most well-known portable console to date! You may use mGBA (originally developed for it only but 0.5+ added GB/C support). There are also the ‘VBA Next’ and GPSP RetroArch cores but it’s advised to use the ‘VBA Next’ core. Not all games may work the same and some games may not run at full speed. VBA Next is said to give better performance but your mileage may vary depending on the games you play.

Metroid Fusion (one of the most iconic GBA games)

  • Neo Geo Pocket Colour: You can use NeopopVITA (Henkaku showcase) or the MednaFen ‘ngp’ core.

7th Generation

  • PSP: One of the most iconic portable game consoles! You may use either ARK or Adrenaline to use the bundled ePSP software in the Vita to play most PSP games!
  • Nintendo DS: There’s an alpha emulator that’s only a Proof of Concept so don’t hold your breath.

    BurnOut Legends PSP

Conclusion

The PSVita, like the PSP, can emulate a wide range of consoles so that’s one of the features that makes the PSVita a very decent homebrew console. You can also emulate most of the above consoles on the PSP or via VHBL/ARK on 3.61+ (or firmwares lower than 3.60).

Camera Patch Light for Adrenaline

$

Developer ‘Freakler’ has contributed to the community once again. This time he’s released a plugin that enables right analogue stick support for a lot of PSP games on Adrenaline.

What’s Camera Patch Light?

The PSP doesn’t have a right analogue stick so some games have awkward controls for camera look. Many games got past this by requiring you to press a shoulder button along with the left analogue stick but since the Vita has a right analogue stick, TheFlow decided to make use of it. While the function was there, homebrew required somebody to add in right-analogue support game by game and only a few games (such as GTA Liberty City Stories) got that treatment. Thankfully, Sony put the ability to use the right analogue stick as common camera combinations so support was already there for some games.

This plugin allows you to use the right analogue stick in over 50 games thanks to ‘Freakler’ adding the controls for right analogue usage.

How do I use this plugin?

First of all, this plugin only works on Adrenaline eCFW (so sorry ARK users). That means that if you’re on 3.61 or higher, you can’t use it as you can only use ARK. Installation is quite simple:

  • Download and extract the plugin on your computer
  • Copy the ‘prx’ file to ms0:/seplugins (or ux0:/pspemu/seplugins)
  • Add this line “ms0:seplugins/camera_patch_lite.prx 1” to your game.txt file (word by word)

That’s it! Simply open Adrenaline and game away. For a list of compatible games, just check out the original thread on Hackinformer forums that is linked below. Popular supported games are Daxter, Final Fantasy Type0 and the Monster Hunter games. Enjoy playing your PSP games with better camera controls and a better screen 😉 If you have any issues, post on the thread linked below; it’s important to note that some games DO NOT work. Adrenaline should be updated eventually for PSX support and 64MB RAM support so we can look forward to that too!

Adrenaline-2 released! (PSVita – ePSP Custom Firmware)

$

0

Adrenaline version 2 is finally out after being promised by TheFlow in February. It’s April now but I think it’s much better to have a more complete and bug free version than a buggy update! Of course, that doesn’t mean that TheFlow wasn’t busy with the Vita as he added USB mass storage device support for easy file transfer and the ability to use a pen drive or external S/HDD via VitaShell.

What’s Adrenaline-2?

Adrenaline is a hack via a Custom IPL to be able to use your Vita as a PSP so it’s an ePSP hack. ePSP hacks have been pretty popular throughout the Vita’s lifetime especially before HenKAKU was released. The internal PSP emulator allows us to play all PSP games, run PSP homebrew and do other stuff. VHBL, unlike ePSP hacks, only allows *some* PSP homebrew. Without a doubt, Adrenaline is an awesome piece of software because it seriously enchances the built-in PSP emulator on the Vita. ARK is another ePSP hack but it doesn’t have extra features, such as custom filters, but can run on 3.61 and 3.63. Adrenaline-2 requires taiHEN of course!

What changed/got updated?

Adrenaline-2 brings some very notable changes such as:

  • Allowing you to use 64MB in homebrews (PSP 2000+ homebrews can now be run)
  • Letting you use ur0 as the memory stick (ur0 is found on all Vita models even the FAT (1000/1k) ). Beware when using it as nobody has confirmed if long term usage of ur0 is SAFE.
  • An advanced AA was added
  • You can change scren size
  • You may change the way how smooth graphics work
  • The sound issue in “MotorStorm” and some other games has been fixed
  • ms0:/PICTURE and ms0:/PICTURE are now seen by XMB so say hello to custom wallpapers
  • Changing settings in official settings now has effects
  • Files for Adrenaline should now be placed in ux0:/adrenaline not ux0:/pspemu/Adrenaline

Conclusion

Of course, you can still use plugins, VSHMenu and all stuff that worked in the previous version of Adrenaline! Installation instructions are in the official GitHub gist release page below! Make sure you properly read the instructions and report any issues to TheFlow. PSX support is still not there so don’t bug TheFlow about it.. use the PSX core in RetroArch or use ARK without sound! Right stick analogue patches still work of course 🙂

Adrenaline-3 released! PSX and save state support (and more)

$

0

That was quite quick! TheFlow released Adrenaline-2 just about 2 weeks ago and now version 3 is out. Of course, this release brings some awaited features that make the PSVita the console it should have been in the first place. Let’s find out more about our Easter present!

What’s Adrenaline-3?

Adrenaline v3 is the third version of Adrenaline, TheFlow’s PSP eCFW. Unlike other eCFWs, it has various extra features such as filters and built-in savestates thanks to taiHEN. You may use PSP plugins, play PSP/PSX games, use homebrew and do a lot more things via Adrenaline but perhaps one of the coolest things about it is that you have full XMB support. Of course, we can’t forget right analogue stick support!

What’s new/got updated?

The changes are as follows:

  • You may now load PS1/PSX games from XMB and play them with sound.
  • You may now use the built-in save states from Adrenaline’s menu
  • You may use the USB connection option in XMB
  • You can return to LiveArena by double pressing the PS button
  • Some issues with beta games fixed (Elder Scrolls & Saints Row)
  • Startup image added that was designed by Freakler
  • Other bug fixes

As one can see, Adrenaline-3 is a must have so make sure you get it as soon as possible. PSX supoort is probably one of the most awaited features that we finally have working properly on 3.60. Save states are also nice as now, you don’t have to worry about messing up your game when you take a radical decision 😉 Adrenaline is now open source too!

How to install?

As with other versions, the procedure remains mostly unchanged. Of course, you need a PSVita/PSTV on 3.60 running taiHEN. Then, just add the adrenaline plugin to config.txt and download the 6.61 update to your Vita and place it in ux0:/adrenaline. For more detailed instructions, follow the link below! Expect Adrenaline Easy Installer to be updated sometime soon as well 🙂

Adrenaline Easy Installer 1.09 released – Adrenaline-3.1 support

$
0
0

Easter is over but as you might have heard, Adrenaline-3 has been released and it’s quite a major release! PSX support, save state support and the fact that it became open source are all very big things which make Adrenaline probably the best eCFW for the Vita on any firmware. That being said, it still may be a tad annoying for some to install it. That’s where ‘Freakler”s homebrew saves the day!

What’s Adrenaline Easy Installer?

As the name suggests, it’s a homebrew that makes installing Adrenaline a breeze. It lets you install Adrenaline on any PSP game/demo you have by taking care of doing stuff underneath the hood itself. It can also install a PSP basegame if you don’t have a PSP game so it’s got you covered. Apart from installing Adrenaline, it can uninstall it, install a custom theme and download the required PSP 6.61 update for Adrenaline itself .

What’s updated/got changed in version 1.09?

The following things got updated/changed:

  • Update 1.08 : Support for Adrenaline-3
  • Update 1.08 : Flash files are no longer reset when upgrading/downgrading as it’s not needed
  • In 1.09 : Support for Adrenaline-3.1

As one may see, the changes are pretty straightforward but that’s the beauty of this homebrew. It’s there to make your life easier and it succeeds in doing just that. Simply follow the instructions on screen and that’s it!

How do I get it?

Installing it on your Vita is pretty easy too. Just download the VPK from the link below, copy it to your Vita and install it via VitaShell. Remember, this is a system utility so without a doubt, it’ll require unsafe permissions; that means that you should get it from a verified source as homebrew has contained malware in the past. It will probably be updated on VitaDB for download via VHBB soon enough. Report any issues pertaining to the installer to Freakler in a civil way on GitHub. Any issues with Adrenaline are to be reported to the TheFlow.

6.61 Adrenaline-4 released : Full screen PSX gaming on PSTV

$

0

TheFlow, of course, seems to have a hard time taking breaks. Now, he presents us with the 4th update to Adrenaline after releasing Adrenaline-2,3 and 3.1 in a short period of time. Adrenaline-4 brings about quite a few fixes and features pertaining to the PSX emulator so you really ought to upgrade to this release if you plan to do any PSX gaming on your Vita.

What’s Adrenaline-4?

Adrenaline is an eCFW for the PSVita’s built-in PSP emulator that lets you run all PSP games and homebrew. Apart from that, you may use plugins, homebrew that needs 64MB of RAM and you have access to full XMB! Adrenaline also lets you apply filters to your games, use savestates amongst other things.

What’s changed in Adrenaline-4?

This is the changelog of Adrenaline-4 and 3.1:

  • Sound issues after exiting PSX games are fixed
  • Support for CWCheat for PSX games has been added
  • Custom graphic filters can now be used with PSX games
  • Screen mode adjustment has been added for PSX games (read the changelog at the bottom of this article for more info)
  • Screenshot support for PS1 games has been added
  • The network update feature now can search for Adrenaline updates for easy updating!:o
  • Various bug fixes

The update, especially for PSX lovers, is quite a big one so it’s recommended to upgrade immediately. You can use various methods to update to this version.

Conclusion:

Installing Adrenaline-4 is quite simple; you may either use Adrenaline Easy Installer 1.10 (1.10 is needed for Adrenaline-4 support) or you can install it yourself via editing taiHEN’s config file and dropping the plugin yourself. Adrenaline requires Vita FW 3.60, works on any PSVita and the PSTV and needs taiHEN.

Note: PSX means Playstation 1/PS1

Ever 17: The Out of Infinity English Beta Patch for PSP released

$

0

I don’t know but the name of this visual novel is a tad on the odd side for me… The PSP never dies as game translations keep surfacing up from time to time. This time, it’s Ever 17; a visual novel that’s available on the Dreamcast, PSP, PS2, PC amongst other consoles. It only got an English translation for one platform for some reason and that’s the PC.

What’s Ever 17?

It’s a Japanese visual novel in which you choose between various options in order to progress in a story. Originally released in 2002 on the Dreamcast and the PS2; it got various other ports but only in Japanese. That was until the 2005 port for the PC in English. Now, 8 years after the game was poeted to the PSP; western audiences can finally play it! The game revolves around two guys that were trapped in an underwater theme park along with some other people that’s set to blow up in 119 hours due to high water pressure.

How do I get it?

First of all, this is a translation of a PSP game with files from the PC English version. This means that you need a PSP that’s on CFW to run the patched ISO; and obviously you can play it on your PSVita via Adrenaline and probably ARK. These are the instructions in a nutshell:

  1. Download the patch from the link below
  2. Unzip the patch in a seperate folder
  3. Copy your Ever 17 game ISO into the folder of the patch
  4. Drag the ISO onto ‘patch.bat’
  5. Profit! (Copy the game over to your PSP/Vita and play!)

Due to the use of .bat files, this of course requires a Windows machine (WINE may or may not work). Say thanks to user ‘MrComputerRevo’ of GBATemp forums and the translators of the PC game for this patch 🙂

Phlipple and L’Abbaye des Morts ports for PSP released

$

0

Yes, the releases in the title are about 2 months old but they’ve went under the radar. While most of us are interested about the PSVita’s hacking scene, it’s not too hard to forget that the PSP’s hacking scene is still somewhat alive.

What’s Phlipple?

Phlipple is a 3D puzzle game that’s been ported to the PSP by developer ‘bomblik’. The developer is more well known for his BlockOut II port for the Vita and GNU Robbo ports, both of which were GekiHEN contest entries. The goal of this game is to reduce a 3D shape to a single square by flipping around the edges of the shape. It’s a relatively interesting concept that you should check out if you wish to try out something new.

Phlipple screenshot on PSP

What’s L’Abbaye des Morts?

This is a port of a game by the Spaniard ‘Locomalito’ to the PSP by /talk user ‘HCF’ (no, it’s got nothing to do with math). L’Abbaye des Morts is a 2D platformer with chiptune music and a high difficulty level as you can’t save but you have to play it in ONE sitting. Good luck doing that but it should be fun for a while 😉

L’Abbaye des Morts

How do I get them?

Simply follow the links below and download the archives and extract them to ms0:/PSP/GAME or the directory you use for your homebrews (it may be different if you use a plugin for sorting homebrew). These pieces of homebrew should work on all PSPs with CFW and of course, you may play them on your PSVita with Adrenaline or ARK.

PSP Homebrew Browser for PS VITA

Developer Arkanite, the developer behind VITA Homebrew browser along with with devnoname120 has released yet quite an other useful application for the Playstation VITA. This time it was done by himself and serves us with the ability to download PSP homebrew for our PS VITA’s that are running Adrenaline. It is also worth noting that the current application is under beta stage so you may be bound to find some bugs. Due to this being first public release, the current homebrew database is rather small at the moment, however this will change with upcoming updates as more homebrews are tested.

Beta Release Change-log:

  • Download and install PSP homebrew directly on your PS Vita.
  • Download que, will handle downloads and installs for you while you’re browsing.
  • Install to ux0 or ur0 pspemu directories.
  • Background data retrieval for a smooth browsing experience.
  • Preview galleries with homebrew information.
  • Direct switching to Vita Homebrew Browser.

Arkanite has also been teasing this homebrew for a while on his twitter page. It’s nice to see that it has finally made an appearance in the PS VITA scene.

Developer Arkanite has also insisted that to request features. You can do so by submitting an issue on their GitHub. There are already some enhancments being worked on, so be sure to not submit any duplicates! I can certainly see this is a homebrew essential for the PS VITA. For more information, you can find the original thread here: https://forum.hackinformer.com/viewtopic.php?f=111&t=1044

Adrenaline States Manager for PSVita released – Don’t lose your savestates when updating to a newer version of Adrenaline!

Adrenaline is one of the most popular, if not the most popular, hack that the taiHEN scene has. Of course, there are a few shortcomings and one that I find the most annoying is that you lose your savestates when updating to a newer version. Developer ‘DavisDev’ (GitHub) has finally come to our rescue and solved the issue with his new utility called Adrenaline States Manager.

What’s Adrenaline States Manager?

As the name suggests, it’s a utility that lets you manage your Adrenaline save states. With this you can do a variety of stuff such as:

  • Change the version of savestates. This lets you keep your savestates useable if you upgrade/downgrade Adrenaline (if you downgrade, you must do so to a version that supports savestates of course)
  • View information about the savestates. This can let you have an idea of what save states you have without having to open Adrenaline
  • Delete savestates
  • It has a network update function which reminds you when the utility is updated

This utility has one major advantage over Adrenaline’s savestate manager and that is being able to change the version of the savestates. Something that I would like to see in a future version is the ability to backup/import savestates easily so you can continue your game from another Vita/PSTV more easily. Something else that I’d like to see that may or may not be out of reach would be to add a convertor to let you play the savestates in a PSP/PSX emulator. This application is written in ONElua and it requires extended permissions. Make sure you don’t change the version number of the savestate to a non-existent version of Adrenaline as it may or may not cause issues…..

Adrenaline States Manager in action

How do I get it?

As of right now, it’s not available on VitaDB. That means that you must download it from the link below. Don’t get it from a source you don’t trust as homebrew that requires system permissions (like this one) can potentially harm your Vita if it has malicious code in it. Report any issues to the developer ‘DavisDev’ who is Davis Nunez on Twitter.

6.61 Adrenaline-4.2 released – ISO sorting with Game Categories Lite

$

Like Adrenaline v4.1, this is yet another minor update. That means that ‘TheFlow’ is still looking how to improve our user experience and since you can update via the network update, there’s really no reason to update.

What’s Adrenaline?

Adrenaline is probably the most popular hack that runs in taiHEN 3.60. Thanks to Adrenaline you may do the following on your hacked PSVita/PSTV:

  • Play PSP games and homebrew
  • Run homebrew that needs 64MB of RAM
  • Use PSP plugins and the recovery menu
  • Use the original PSP XMB with all the features
  • Do savestates
  • Apply screen filters to your games
  • Use the right analogue stick if your the game you wish to play has a patch (Camera Patch Lite has a lot of patches)
  • A lot of other features that make the Vita superior over the PSP.. at being a PSP

What’s changed/got updated in 6.61 Adrenaline-4.2?

The following bug fixes have been implemented:

  • Support for sorting PSP ISO/CSO games with the ‘Game Categories Lite’ plugin. If you use this plugin, you can sort your PSP games into sections because before the only way to get ISOs to show up was the use the Uncategorised section.
  • The English Patch for Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep now works properly

This, obviously, is a relatively minor update but I suggest you update to get the latest bug fixes!

6.61 Adrenaline-4.2 update process

How do I get it?

You can use the Network system update function via XMB (like normal PSP updates). If you use this, you must do a new access point as dummy access points like Adrenaline 4.1 required don’t work anymore (for me at least). When you do a new access point, it works as it would normally on a PSP. If you’re installing it for the first time, I suggest using Adrenaline Easy Installer 1.13 which is updated for 6.61 Adrenaline-4.2. The image of this article has the CXMB plugin with the Ika Musume (Squid Girl) theme that is not included in Adrenaline!

Changelog + download link (for manual installation): https://github.com/TheOfficialFloW/Adrenaline/releases/tag/v4.2

Adrenaline Easy Installer (requires system permissions so get it from a trusted source like this one): https://github.com/Freakler/vita-AdrenalineEasyInstaller/releases/tag/v1.13

N.B: If you use savestates, they’ll disappear when you update! You can fix this by installing Adrenaline States Manager (covered a few hours ago on Wololo) and changing the save state version. It should work well as it’s okay with Chrono Trigger.

6.61 Adrenaline-5 for the PSVita released

Like Adrenaline-4.2, this is yet another minor update so think of it more of Adrenaline-4.3. It’s mostly a bug fix release but since it’s pretty easy to update via network update, you should still update 🙂

What’s Adrenaline?

Adrenaline is probably the most popular hack on the PSVita by far. It allows you to do various things such as:

  • Run PSP/PSX games with full sound
  • Apply filters to the screen
  • Do savestates
  • Run homebrew, even homebrew that requires 64MB of RAM (Homebrew for the PSP Slim or newer)
  • Use the full XMB (the PSP’s system UI)
  • Update Adrenaline itself via the Network Update option in the Settings section of XMB
  • Use Plugins
  • Much more

What’s updated/changed in 6.61 Adrenaline-5?

This release brings about the following features/changes:

  • An option called ”Hide DLC’s in game menu’ is now available in the Adrenaline menu
  • The ‘Original’ graphics filter has been re-added as it caused some issues with PSX/PS1 games.
  • An icon bug that was introduced with Adrenaline-4.2 has been addressed.
  • An issue in which the framebuffer became corrupted after loading a savestate is now fixed.
  • The Adrenaline icon is now hidden in the game menu.

As you may see, all the changes are relatively minor but bug fixes are still important. Thanks to networking updaitng, you can install 6.61 Adrenaline-5 really easy so a bug fix like this should be applied ASAP.

How do I get it?

As mentioned, the easiest way is via the network update option in XMB. If you don’t have Adrenaline installed or want to re-install it for some reason, you can use Adrenaline Easy Installer by ‘Freakler’ as it makes the process very simple even if you don’t have a PSP game/demo installed.

Adrenaline Easy Installer version 1.14: https://github.com/Freakler/vita-AdrenalineEasyInstaller/releases/tag/v1.14

NOTE: Savestates from an older version can’t be used after updating. This can be fixed by installing Adrenaline States Manager on your PSVita and changing the version to 5.0 (Major version 5, Minor version 0) as to preserve your save states. It’s recommended you do a proper save before updating to Adrenaline-5.

GTA Remastered Controls Patch v2 released for PSVita/PSTV

Somehow, GTA Vice City Stories and Liberty City Stories got ported to (Update: woops, these got not ported to the PSP, they were made and released for the PSP, then later on ported to other consoles) developed for the PSP back in the days. While that’s enough of a feat that was pulled off by the developers, the PSP lacks the right analogue stick which makes controls a tad annoying. Thanks to TheFlow, we can play GTA VCS/LCS on our Vita with better controls!

What’s the GTA Remastered Controls Patch?

GTA VCS/LCS are the only GTA games that you can play on the Vita directly so they obviously deserve this treatment. Thanks to this plugin by ‘TheFlow’, you can play GTA LCS/VCS on your Vita via Adrenaline with much better controls. Camera control is much easier with this plugin as you don’t need to fiddle around with only one analogue stick. GTA Remastered Controls really makes the PSVita the best way to enjoy GTA LCS/VCS on the go as iOS/Android devices aren’t really good to play GTA games on since touch controls aren’t really too adequate.

GTA VCS on the Vita. From TheFlow’s Twitter

What changed in GTA Remastered Controls Patch v2?

This is the what changed:

  • If you change invert look options in the menu, they’ll also affect the right analogue stick (that’s not found on the PSP)
  • You can now press the L trigger while slow aiming as it didn’t work before because of a bug
  • Flying planes and helicopters now work properly since before, the R trigger was used for both acceleration and rotation

After v2 was released, v2 fix was released which fixes compatibility issues with some regions of the GTA games. It’s recommended you do this update for the bug fixes.

How do I get it?

Obviously, you must have the GTA VCS/LCS PSP game on your PSVita with Adrenaline. Installation is pretty simple if you follow these steps:

  • Copy the file ‘gta_remastered.prx’ (plugin) at “ux0:pspemu/seplugins/gta_remastered.prx” on your PSVita/PSTV
  • Add “ms0:/seplugins/gta_remastered.prx 1” (without the inverted commas) to “ux0:pspemu/seplugins/game.txt”
  • Open the game and enjoy!

As you can see, the procedure is exactly the same as to when you install a game plugin on the PSP. To get the plugin, just follow the link below. Report any issues to ‘TheFlow’ on GitHub or Twitter. Have fun playing GTA VCS/LCS on the go!

Adrenaline Bubble Booter released! Boot PSP games directly from LiveArea on 3.60 with Adrenaline

$

The day has finally come! Thanks to Adrenaline Bubble Booter, you can now load PSP/PSX games and homebrew directly via LiveArea.

What’s Adrenaline Bubble Booter?

As the title suggests, it’s a passthrough that lets you have shortcuts (in the form of bubbles) from LiveArea to directly boot PSP/PSX games and homebrew. This is a feature that was available on some older firmwares with their ePSP hacks and with ARK Autoboot. Thanks to this plugin, you can get the superior PSP/PSX experience with Adrenaline which includes features such as extra screen filters, savestates and much much more. You can always exit to the PSPs XMB by pressing the PS button and pressing ‘Yes’ like Adrenaline. This doesn’t change the bubble’s appearance so you need fo take care of that yourself. This is simply a shortcut so you can use something like Bubble Studio to do that.

MolecularShell menu to reload taiHEN’s config.txt. Press START to open it.

How do I get Adrenaline Bubble Booter on my system?

The process is pretty straightforward but you it’s recommended you read it at least twice to make sure you understand it properly

  • First of all, download the RAR file from the link below
  • Extract the RAR file and copy the whole ‘adrbblbooter’ to ux0: (your Vita’s main memory partition, will probably work with ur0)
  • Add ‘ux0:adrbblbooter/adrbblbooter.suprx’ before the Adrenaline plugin in the config.txt section of the bubble you’re using for this
  • (If want to bypass the Adrenaline start image, add ‘ux0:adrbblbooter/adrbblbooter_nostartdat.suprx’ instead of ‘ux0:adrbblbooter/adrbblbooter.suprx’)
  • Now, reboot your device or reload the taiHEN config file via MolecularShell
  • After that, go to ‘ux0:adrbblbooter/bubblesdb’
  • Create a text file with the TITLEID of the PSP game you’re using as a passthrough. You must write in the TITLEID of the bubble on your Vita NOT of the game you wish to open.
  • Open the text file (.txt) you created and write in the path to the ISO/CSO/PBP you wish to open via the passthrough. The path must be via ‘ms0:’ (from ux:pspemu) and not ‘ux0:’. This is an example: ‘ms0:/PSP/GAME/FILER/EBOOT.PBP’
  • You’re done! Open the bubble and viola!

I confirm that this works as I tried it with a PSX game called Spyro. There are no issues with this plugin if the directory has spaces in between. Have fun with your new PSP custom bubbles! Report any issues to ‘Leecherman’ (aka LMAN). Obviously, you can start cloning bubble to get more shortcuts.

6.61 Adrenaline-5.1 released – Various bug fixes and ability to skip the Adrenaline boot logo

TheFlow has updated Adrenaline yet again. This time, it’s a minor release that has some bug fixes but they’re useful nonetheless especially for PSTV users. It’s recommended you do this update as it’s pretty easy to apply if you have a network connection on your device. The Adrenaline-5.1 is strongly recommended for PSTV users as it fixes the network update function.

What’s Adrenaline?

Adrenaline is the infamous ePSP hack for PSVita/PSTV consoles running firnware 3.60 with taiHEN/HENkaku. The main features of it are the ability to play PSP and PSX (with full sound) games but it also has many other features that make it the vastly superior over the normal PSP. These are is cool stuff you could do with Adrenaline:

  • You can use custom screen filters (not only the official Sony one)
  • You can do savestates
  • You can run homebrew that requires 64MB of RAM
  • You can use plugins (such as CXMB)
  • You can easily update Adrenaline via Network Update in XMB as you would do on a normal PSP
  • Many other features!

What’s been added/updated in 6.61 Adrenaline-5.1?

The following changes/bug fixes have been made:

  • An option has been added in the Settings tab of the Adrenaline menu to skip the adrenaline boot logo.
  • A message explaining the Original graphics filter better has been included. It reads “All graphics related options are not taking effect with the Original rendering mode”.
  • A bug is fixed in which payloadx was not being updated which in turn caused some bugs
  • Fixed the ‘20000006’ bug on the PSTV. PSTV users can now easily update Adrenaline via network update.
  • The PSVita/PSTV’s CPU clock has been changed back to 333MHz from 444MHz when running Adrenaline which may save some battery life.

This update is highly recommended as it fixes some issues that might have affected some of you. Follow the links below to download and apply the update yourself if for some reason, you can’t do the normal way via the network update. You can also update via Adrenaline Easy Installer to make the process quicker. You can also change the version of your save states not to lose them.
