PSP: 6.61 Downgrader updated – Now supports PSP E1000 & firmware 6.60!

$

0

The first downgrader was only working on most PSPs (not on E1000) and did not support a direct downgrade to firmware 6.60.

This new version of the downgrader now supports all PSPs (including the E1000) and also supports a direct downgrade from firmware 6.61 to 6.60.

Qwikrazor has pushed a proper update of Davee’s Chronoswitch downgrader, which is now capable of doing the very same as the previous version, but with added firmware 6.61. support.

The new Chronoswitch downgrader v6 supports firmwares 6.3x up to firmware 6.61, and can downgrade your PSP from up to firmware 6.61 down to firmware 5.00 (lower firmwares are currently untested), as long as your PSP supports said firmware in the first place.

Once again great work by qwikrazor! Next stops: The updated ME & LME CFWs for 6.61 and the permanent patch for firmwares 6.30+.

PSP: ME CFW, LME CFW & LightSpeed have been updated for Firmware 6.61!

Just a few days after the downgrader was updated to fully support firmware 6.61, Developer Rahim-US has updated the ME CFW & LME CFW to firmware 6.61.

I also have updated some of my projects. My LightSpeed Mod has been updated to firmware 6.61 as well.

Developer Rahim-US, the person in charge of updating Neur0n’s ME & LME CFW, has published an updated version of the ME and LME CFW, which now also support the firmware 6.61.

The ME and LME CFWs are the most versatile CFWs there are, and I personally would recommend these CFWs to anyone who is interested in using a CFW on the PSP.

Since this has been a simple port from 6.60 to 6.61, no new features have been added, so the 6.61 ME & LME CFW have the same features as the 6.60 ME & LME CFW.

The 6.61 ME-2.3 CFW also supports cIPL, which means that an old PSP 1000 or PSP 2000 (non-88v3) using the 6.61 ME CFW is capable of rebooting (or losing power) without having to use any kind of launcher to return into CFW mode.

It is currently the only 6.61 CFW that offers cIPL support.

The LME CFW can not do such kind of magic (except on firmware 6.20, thanks to the permanent patch), since it is made for the newer PSPs (2000 88v3, 3000s, Go, E1000), which do not support cIPL.

These PSPs have to use a launcher to return into CFW mode after rebooting the device (or losing power), but there is a solution to return into CFW mode with ease and style.

LightSpeed 661

My LightSpeed XMB Mod is the solution. It replaces either the digital comics or SensMe channels XMB Icon and reuses it as an CFW launcher.

It is easy to use and also easy to uninstall, if you dont like it. So why don’t you give it a try?

This pretty much brings the firmware 6.61 to the same level as the firmware 6.60. All important things that have been available for 6.60 either just work on 6.61 or have been ported to 6.61.

Now lets wait another 3.5 years for PSP firmware 6.62, haha.

As I have implied in the sentence above, Zload.net is my very own website, and it is pretty much an archive for various files (mostly firmwares).

Pretty much all important (e)PSP hacking files in the last few years have been hosted on Zload.net, and it established itself as a valuable source for a lot of uncommon files for the PSP & PS Vita.

psvita update

Ranging from offering a lot of old and rare files, to offering all official Sony firmware for the PSP, PSP Go and PS Vita (the latter even as easy on-the-fly updates), it is a great source for acquiring files that were thought to be ‘lost in the vastness of space & time the internet’.

3 Generations, 3 Handhelds, 3 Emulators

It is no secret that i love handhelds. They are portable, cool and make me feel like a child again. I also love emulating different systems on my handhelds, be it a console, another handheld or even an arcade machine. I want to share my favourite emulators on my favourite handhelds with you. Hope you share the fun.

1) BlargSNES on 3DS

BlargSNES is a SNES emulator for 3DS. It is without a doubt the best homebrew on the 3DS scene. Right now it doesn’t support games with special chips and has graphical glitches on many games. But the games it runs, it runs them great. You can have an idea about compatibility here. So far, SNES emulation on a handheld is really hard. I am not counting tablets, smartphones etc. Even though SNES emulation on PSP has a high compatibility, it still suffers from slowdowns which is very distracting for some games. DSTWO has a SNES emulator for Nintendo DS, but it is worse than the PSP emulators. BlargSNES gives us hope that near perfect SNES emulation might be possible with this generation handhelds. It is now at version 1.3 and with each revision, it gets better and better. Without further adue, here is the video.

2) MVSPSP on PSP

MVSPSP is a MVS/AES emulator for PSP. I used to love Neo-Geo back at the arcades. King of Fighters, Metal Slug, the incredibly underrated Street Hoop and numerous gems that i can go on and on. I wasn’t aware of a console named AES back then. Well, even if i did, i wouldn’t buy it with that price tag anyways. MVSPSP gives you back this Neo-Geo experience everywhere you go. Emulation quality is great. Even though i should accept there are some slowdowns here and there that isn’t on original hardware or psn neo-geo station releases, it is still very close to the arcade experience you get back then. I love to change the hardware from MVS to AES to stop myself from mindlessly increasing credits. It also helps me to imagine how it would be to have an AES back then. You can also change CPU speed and audio emulation quality to save battery/give your game a boost. You can get it from the downloads section here at Wololo. Here is a glimpse of the emulator running on a PSP Go.

3) Goomba Color on Gameboy Advance

Goomba Color is a Gameboy/Gameboy Color emulator for Gameboy Advance. I can already hear you saying GBA already supports GB/GBC games. Yup, it does. But GB/GBC compatibility has been abandoned for GBA Micro. Also Goomba Color has many options which aren’t available with hardware emulation. Just to name a few, it can enable Super Gameboy borders for supporting games, it has savestates, there are a lot of pallette options you can choose from (you can even change them on-the-fly which is not possible with hardware emulator). Also it is super convenient to have your own GB/GBC compilations. Game compatibility is really high and most games work fine at full speed. It is only one or two times i encountered a fps drop, but it is nothing major. From a technical standpoint, it is astonishing to emulate a system with a 8 mhz CPU on a system with a 16 mhz CPU with such accuracy. Even though i have other GBA models which natively supports GB/GBC games, i always find myself using Goomba Color on my favourite GBA model, GBA Micro. The author still works on this emulator and it got an update on December 12, 2014. If you want to see it in action on my black GBA Micro, here you go.

PSP Firmware 6.61 – CFW users finally excluded from using PSN services?!

$

0

We all were surprised and a bit shocked after Sony’s release of the Playstation Portable firmware 6.61 a few months ago.

But is this new firmware responsible for CFWs being unable to connect to the PSN services?! Well…

Yes and no.

661 lme

It is true that Custom Firmwares for the older base firmwares 6.20, 6.3x and 6.60 are currently not able to connect to the PSN services (Error code: ‘80435061’), but Sony did not completely exclude CFW users from using the PSN services.

The convenience of using the PSN services, regardless of installed base firmware, seems to be gone (for now), but the released Custom Firmwares for the base firmware 6.61 are still kicking it!

PSN access is still possible via 6.61 OFW (Sony’s official firmware), 6.61 ME-2.3, 6.61 LME-2.3 and 6.61 PRO-C2 (CFW’s most recent build by qwikrazor87).

playstation.store_.logo_-600x300

Since a lot of Themes and Plugins are not and (most likely) won’t be updated for firmware 6.61, staying on a lower base firmware seems to be a much more convenient choice.

Older CFWs showed us how to do it, and I think it should be possible to update the 6.20, 6.3x and 6.60 builds of the ME, LME and PRO CFW to properly mask themselves as firmware 6.61, which, in the end, will grant them, once again, full access to the PSN services.

vitatv_2_ds3_controllers

While I am currently having some fun with a PSPgo and a DualShock3 controller (yes, you can pair those 2 devices), I am going to test the various builds of LME CFW and PRO CFW (for the various OFWs), and will report which ones are broken and require fixing.

Being able to use the convenience of the 6.20 permanent patch and using the PSN services is something that should not be a choice on the PSP, at least not in 2015.

Stay tuned for an update on using the PSN services on lower (base) Custom Firmwares!

Release: CapusbPSP by 172310

Japanese developer 173210 just released CapusbPSP. As the name reveals (kind of), this is a tool to capture usb traffic from the PSP.

173210 started working several years ago on the PSP’s usb drivers analysis, which could be leveraged on the Vita as well: the PSP’s usb communication to a PS2/PS3 also works from within the PSP emulator on the PS Vita.

Capusbpsp’s source code has been released to contribute to this quest. 173210 hasn’t given on on his project to understand and reverse engineer USBPSPCommunicationDriver (a project started back in 2013), and is asking for help completing the task.

sony_psp_usb

If you can help, feel free to lend a hand to 173210 in our forums.

Once compiled, capusbpsp can be run as a plugin on any CFW-enabled PSP

PS Vita: No more PSN access for eCFW users on firmwares ≤3.35?

$
0
0

A few days ago I’ve written an article about PSP CFW users being unable to connect to the Playstation Store, if their PSP is not running the firmware 6.61.

It seems that this applies to the PS Vita’s PSPemulator as well, kind of…

If you are using a PS Vita that is running a firmware that is older than the most recent firmware 3.36, then you might have noticed that you are unable to connect to the PSN services.

psn-down

Not only do the native PS Vita PSN connections refuse to work (due to not running PS Vita firmware 3.36), but also do the previously working PSPemulator PSN connections (via TN-V or ARK-2 eCFW) refuse to work as of now.

This has pretty much to do with the newly released PSP firmware 6.61, which seems to be mandatory for accessing the PSN services on the PSP (even with CFW). Since the PS Vita runs the PSPemulator firmware 6.60 up to PS Vita firmware 3.35, this applies to the PS Vita’s PSPemulator as well (once again, including eCFWs as ARK-2 or TN-V).

PSVITA-uselessFW2

In the end this pretty much means that your PSP (Go) has to run a 6.61 (custom) firmware to access and use the PSN services, and that your PS Vita (TV) has to run a 3.36 (emulator custom) firmware to access and use the PSN services (from within but also outside of the PSPemulator).

The famous TN-V10 eCFW for the PS Vita firmwares ≤3.20 are based on the PSPemulator firmware 6.60, which every PS Vita firmware up to 3.35 runs. As of PS Vita firmware 3.36, the PS Vita is running the PSPemulator firmware 6.61, a firmware which has no (official & publicly available) TN-V build.

PSN-store-error

This pretty much means that to properly access and use the PSN services on a PS Vita, you have to update your device to version 3.36 (yes, not even 3.35 would be enough, since that one still runs the PSPemulator firmware version 6.60), which in the end has native PSN access anyways, due to being the most recent firmware.

It is currently not known if TN-V and ARK-2 can be fixed to re-enable PSN access on lower PS Vita firmwares, or if they have to be ported to firmware 3.36 to offer proper PSN access from within the PS Vita’s PSPemulator.

PSN Flash Sale for the Weekend in North America: All Under $1 – Including a TN-X compatible exploitable game

For this weekend’s PSN flash sale, all prices are under $1. It is on now and it will end in Monday, March 23 at 9am PT. You can check the list below, i categorized it to make it easier for you and tried to correct some mistakes on the US PSN Blog Page, like listing Theme Park (it should be Sim Theme Park), Magic Carpet, Soviet Strike, Championship Bass, Extreme Pinball, Populous The Beginning and Hi-Octane as PS3 only where they are Ps one classic and you can buy them for PS3/PSP/PS Vita. Wild Arms 2 isn’t even in the list on the PS Blog, where it is in fact included in this flash sale. If the list is too long, you can just skip it and go to the store: Flash Sale PSN Store Page

If you don’t have your exploit game for TN-X, now can be a good time to grab Tekken 2 for $0.96. It is such a good behaviour to discount Tekken 2 instead of removing it from the PSN store, i appreciate it. I would also recommend getting Gravity Rush for PS Vita for $0.81 if you haven’t bought it yet. It is a great game and a must-buy for that price. Here is the list without further ado:

Fixed: Improved savedata files for the Firmware 3.36 & 3.50 Pool Exploits! – Works on PS Vita and Playstation TV!

Wololo has released the savedata files for the Pool exploits some hours ago, but those files were barely working. (Note from wololo: sorry guys!)

Qwikrazor has improved the savedata files, and a smart detective has found a solution to the (supposedly working, but yet) freezing exploit execution.

Vita Flaw Key Cool Picture

A lot of users have reported freezes on exploit execution, but Qwikrazor was confident that the files should be working.

The funny thing is, both parties were actually right.

Qwikrazor’s files are indeed working, but only if you start World of Pool as a Custom Bubble on firmware 3.36 (which pretty much defeats the meaning of the exploit), or if you are using the following trick on a completely unhacked PS Vita.

custom bubble fixed 3.50

Like I said a few sentences ago, a smart detective (Twitter user trakons to be exact) found a solution to get the current files (even World of Pool!) to work on firmware 3.50.

You simply have to exit the game when it is searching for the hosted Multiplayer game, enter the airplane mode, leave the airplane mode and then continue with the exploit.

This solution has been confirmed to make the exploit work 100%* of the times! (*except when the kernel Exploit fails, and you are forced to reboot the device).

While this sounds like some weird nonsense, it actually works and fixes the freezing issue.

Feel free to check the embedded video that confirms that the exploit savedata files are indeed working on firmwares 3.36 and 3.50.

Oh, and did I mention that this also works on the Playstation TV (VitaTV)? You just have to use a slightly different trick.

Go ahead and download the files for your desired firmware. The files for World of Pool & Pool Hall Pro are included, just choose the ones you need.

PSP: First hacks for the new Firmware 6.61 – PRO CFW & Downgrader updated!

$
0
0

After confirming that the Firmware 6.61 has barely changed (compared to firmware 6.60), developer Qwikrazor has updated the PRO CFW (partly) and the 6.60 Downgrader (once again, partly) to support the firmware 6.61.

The ME & LME CFWs are currently being updated as well.

If you ask why I wrote partly behind the PRO CFW and Downgrader, then you’re asking the right questions.

PSP 2000 CFW update

At first the PRO CFW: I said partly because Qwikrazor did not update the cIPL Installer for the PRO CFW (only supports PSP 1000s & non-88v3 2000s), which means there is not “full CFW” for firmware 6.61 as of now.

PRO CFW should properly work as a temporary CFW on any PSP (be it a 1000, 2000, any of the different 3000s, an E1000 or the Go), though.

Now about the downgrader. The downgrader is capable of downgrading PSPs from firmware 6.61 to a lower firmware, but it is currently not capable of downgrading from 6.61 to 6.60.

You will have to downgrade to 6.39 and then update to 6.60, if you really want to return to firmware 6.60.

Since the PSP E1000 can only install the firmwares (6.50 as pre-installed, no installer available) 6.60 and 6.61, and the downgrader can not downgrade to 6.60, it (the PSP E1000) is currently not supported by the 6.61 downgrader.

Thats pretty much it. We expect that the PRO CFW cIPL Flasher will be fixed in the future, and a newer version of the downgrader be available soon~ish.

If you prefer the ME or LME CFW, then be patient, since it is already being updated to firmware 6.61. No words about the 6.60 HEN, though.

The 6.61 PRO-C CFW and 6.61 downgrader can be downloaded via our forums.

Wireless PSP Custom Firmware installation is now possible!

$

0

If you want to flash your PSP, you usually had to use a USB connection or a card reader to put the Custom Firmware files onto your memory stick, since the PSP is usually unable to properly download them itself.

This has changed now. It is now possible to download & install a PSP Custom Firmware directly onto your PSP.

PSP

If you happen to not own an USB cable for your PSP, but also not a card reader for your PSPs memory stick, then this solution will be something for you:

You only need a working Wifi connection, your PSP itself and around 2-12 Megabytes of free space on your memory stick (or internal storage).

PSP-E1000-Black

Visit the following website, and then select your current installed PSP firmware.

After selecting your PSPs firmware, you have to select which PSP exactly you are using (1000, 2000, 2000v3, 3000, E1000 or PSPgo) and then you will be redirected to a download page for an eligible Custom Firmware for your Playstation Portable.

The site you are getting redirected to is prepared to enable your PSP to directly download the custom firmware files onto your memory stick (or internal storage), which will also be placed in the correct directory (ms0:/PSP/GAME/).

The only requirement is that your PSP has to run a supported firmware (6.20, 6.39, 6.60 or 6.61), but that can be done by the build-in wireless system update feature, which will let you install the official system software 6.61.

It might be a bit late, but offering an on-PSP solution for installing a custom firmware with nothing else than the PSP itself has always been something I wanted to offer.

Feel free to contact me, if you happen to find some bugs. Depending on your Wifi connection, it might take a while to successfully download some of the offered files.

RetroArch 1.2 PSP/3DS

The last time we spoke of RetroArch was quite a while ago, where it was confirmed working on the PS-Vita’s TN-V around last year December. Libretro’s now getting back to releasing yet another great update from the multi-system emulator, RetroArch 1.2. Although the 3DS version is still under development, we can expect this update for the PSP in the coming weeks. This new update brings a lot of new goodies such as:

– Brand new ‘eye candy’ menus

RetroArch now lets you select between three menu display modes:

* RGUI – a very classic, low-resolution menu

* GLUI – a more advanced GL-based menu that lends itself well to touch-based devices

* XMB (a horizontal crossbar menu that is the most eyecandy-rich of all three right now. Similar to the PS3’s and PSP’s menu.

– Scanning files/directories and adding them to the system collections

With this you no longer have to browse your file system all the time looking for a ROM to play. If RetroArch finds a match with a known game on a given system/emulator, it will then add this game to a collection based on the system/emulator of that game.

– Downloading cores online

You can now download cores from RetroArch’s buildbot within the program. Go to Online Updater -> Core Updater and select any of the cores you’d like to have updated/installed.

Built-in input mapping

To access this option Go to Settings -> Input Settings and select ‘Bind All’ to bind each and every button one at a time, or bind the actions individual.

– Ability to remap controls

Similar to what we saw on a recent PS4 update.  To access this option, go to the ‘Quick Menu’ and select ‘Core Input Remapping Options’. From there you can change the controls for each core, which are then saved into a config file.

– Multi-language support

This is self explanatory.

Box Arts!

And a bunch of other cool stuff with more details. You can check them all out here!

I’ll conclude by quoting what Libretro had to say about their PSP/3DS updates:

Some other notes (3DS / PSP version)

We could maybe push out a PSP version of RetroArch 1.2 in the upcoming weeks. I’m hoping to get back with the main contributor (aliaspider) who worked on these ports so that we can be assured that we can at least push out the PSP version in a more or less stable and decent state.

Regarding RetroArch 3DS: it’s still very much a work-in-progress and I don’t think either me or aliaspider would feel comfortable to ship anything right now in terms of official release at this stage, and we need a lot of work done on the cores before we can render some of them playable on the slow 3DS (it’s even slower than the PSP it seems).

If all goes well, maybe we can expect a Vita port sometime? 😉

PSP: 6.61 Infinity – Davee’s ‘Permanent Patch’ for System Software 6.61

$

A few months ago we have told you that the well known PSP developer Davee is working on something like a permanent patch for the PSP firmwares 6.30+.

Currently the permanent patch can only be used up to firmware 6.20, because it has been patched as of firmware 6.30.

Davee’s method, despite not being a permanent patch or cIPL hack, works nonetheless.

While I said it is not a permanent patch, I mean that it works differently than the current one does. It also does not involve cIPL’s, which means that Davee’s method is yet another method that enables a PSP to immediately boot into a Custom Firmware.

I won’t spoil the surprise of how this works, but it is definitely something marvelous. Davee is going to explain how this works anyways, after he has finished his work on Infinity.

This is currently just a proof of concept, which demonstrates that the barebones are successfully working. Davee is still going to improve this, and in the end he will enable you to add a Custom Firmware of your choice to his Infinity base patch. This means you can have a permanent 6.61 ME, 6.61 LME, 6.61 PRO or 6.61 TN Custom Firmware on your Playstation Portable.

PSP

As of now Davee could confirm that Infinity is working on all PSP 1000s, all PSP 2000s (hackable & unhackable) and on most PSP 3000s (a 07g 3000 was impossible to find). This leaves the PSPgo and the PSP E1000 as the last remaining devices that still have to successfully run Davee’s 6.61 Infinity project.

Davee is also currently looking for a talented person that can help him with creating a fitting recovery/restore menu, just in case something breaks, so you can nearly completely unbrick a full-bricked PSP (better brick protection than current 6.20 permanent patch), regardless of its model!

He stated that he only recommends developers, that know the internals of the PSP very well, to contact him for the Recovery Menu application.

PSP 2000 CFW update

In the end, it is nice to see an update from Davee’s 6.6x permanent patch project, which he demonstrated to work on a PSP 3000. I personally could confirm that it works on a PSP 2000 (regardless of it being TA-088v3 or not), but it is far from being complete.

So stay patient, because when Davee finishes this huge project, you guys are going to love it. It is compareable to the 6.20 permanent patch, just better.

Release: VNPSP (a VNDS port)

$

So apparently, 2 years ago a developer nicknamed uppfinnarn made a port of what I assume was the code of VNDS at the time. For those unware, VNDS is a DS/3DS/Android emulator of ONScripter-based Japanese Visual Novels. It allows you to run games such as Fate/Stay Night, Tsukihime and Umineko no Nako Koro Ni (among others) on your device. The PSP port works and I remember it being released, but it somehow got lost in the internet so bad that not even wololo.net has a working copy.

But fear not homebrewers, I got you covered! After a night of struggling with the PSPSDK and VMs and finally deciding to say screw it and settling for the trusty MinimalistPSPSDK for Windows (+the LIBPNG addon) I got the homebrew to compile and work! And yes, I have tested it and it works. Finding and converting the VNs is the hard part. I found a repo with PSP-formatted VNs but since it is a piracy site I will not share it. Google is your friend.

There are a few things that you guys should be aware of:

  • Only ONScripter novels are compatible: there is a way to convert some here (I advise older converters, they are more likely to work);
  • Since this is based on a 2-year old branch of VNDS and it was never truly completed, some things like .ZIP support are broken which forces you to do this:
    1. Convert the the VN to VNDS format like you normally would using the link supplied above;
    2. Copy your VNs to <homebrewdir>/novels/<your novel here>;
    3. However, instead of copying it straight away, go into the converted VNs folder and extract all the zips (script.zip, background.zip, ect) to the root of the folder and make sure to overwrite any conflicts;
    4. NOW you can copy the VN to the PSP/Vita;
    5. You can also try to find VNs in VNDS format using Google-Fu which saves you the trouble of a manual conversion but be sure you do STEP 2.
  • The ingame controls are as follows:
    • Cross – Continue;
    • Circle – Hide Text
    • Square – Backlog
    • Triangle – Menu
    • R – Skip.
BadConvert

This is how a badly converted VN will look like

A few personal tips for Vita users though:

Since some VNs can have up to 10k plus files (Never7 has 15k) and transferring those can be a huge pain with our limited FTP access:

  1. Uncompress ZIP up your novels using 7zip/Winrar;
  2. Copy the zip to your Vita using VitaFTP;
  3. Using PSPFiler, uncompress the ZIP file to the /novels folder.
    • To do this choose the ZIP file with X, choose copy, navigate to the folder and then press R to extract all.
FIlerHint

Extracting via PSPFiler. Notice how my /novels/ folder is organized.

If you want to restart development on this I advise you to maybe use uppfinnarn’s source that you can find here.

I take no credit for this besides making the EBOOT.PBP file, all credit for this awesome work goes to uppfinnarn!

PSP Depackager (A tool to decrypt .pkg files on PSP) is released by qwikrazor87

Developer qwikrazor87 released a tool which makes decrypting the official psn pkg files on PSP possible. PSP Depackager can decrypt PSP/PS1 pkg files (no PS3 files). There are PC tools for that, but having a .pkg decrypter on PSP is great.

As the decrypted files will still need a license, they won’t directly work on OFW. You have to use CFW and npdrm_free plugin for that. For PS1 files, PSP Depackager v2 extracts KEYS.BIN file too, so you can boot it via your CFW.

Here is the readme:

This is a homebrew to install PSN PSP pkgs on the PSP.
pkgs should be placed at ms0:/pkg/, if that folder does not exist, then create it.

place included homebrew on your PSP.
ms0:/PSP/GAME/PSP depackager/EBOOT.PBP

This homebrew only supports installing PSP retail pkgs and files, PS3/debug pkgs are not supported.

boring info, uses the MagicGate hardware for the AES crypto,
no idea about any benefits/disadvantages with it compared to the kirk engine.

Thanks to @ReRepRep for the idea.

Changelog:
v2:
Added KEYS.BIN extraction for PS1 pkgs.
v1:
Initial release

A screenshot of the GUI:

Thanks to qwikrazor87 for the screenshot

Thanks to qwikrazor87 for the screenshot

From my test on a 6.60 PSP GO, it decrypted a 210 MB PS1 pkg in 7 minutes, extracted the KEYS.BIN and i could boot into the game without a problem. Thanks to qwikrazor87 for this great homebrew, hope to see more.

VitaShell 0.2 – Now with 100% more Bubbles!

$

It was just earlier this month that I had the pleasure of telling you guys about VitaShell 0.1, an homebrew that allows us to do many things from simple file browsing (from the Vita file system to the PSPemu’s one) and connecting that to FTP to more advanced stuff like a basic photo gallery. What I did not notice at the time of the original release however was that you have full write access to the PSPemu, to the point you can once again copy EBOOT.PBP files to PSP/GAME freely! This post, however, is about the newest version of VitaShell and a small tutorial on its best feature yet: bubble creation. But before we get to that, here is a small changelog by developer TheFloW himself:

Changelog 0.2:
– Added ability to sign PSP homebrews.
– Added sleep prevention when using FTP, deleting and copying files.
– Added a scrollbar.
– Added date and time to info bar.
– Added correct enter and cancel buttons assignment.
– Added some cosmetic changes.
– Fixed crash when deleting marked entries.
– Copied entries now still rest in clipboard after pasting them.
– The application now cleans itself before launching homebrews.

As you can see there are a few very nice improvements like sleep prevention when in FTP mode and the ability to sign PSP homebrews, which is the feature we need to create the bubbles. The process is rather simple and can be done in 5-10 minutes but has one huge drawback: many PSP homebrews will not work since the code for the signing in VitaShell is based on the Sony eboot format and those are created with a non-static elf. Unfortunately many PSP hombrews use a static elf which make them incompatible erroring with either a 0xFFFFFFFE error or a simple “This cannot be signed error”. I have had about a 50% rate of finding compatible homebrews, but all those that worked do so flawlessly and so does the bubble: homebrew like Wagic, Exult and others work while on the other hand, both me and TheFloW have been unable to find a compatible version of stuff like gPSP. The bubble creating process is extremly simple:

  1. Create a folder inside the PSPemu filesystem with your homebrew (I always use PSP/GAME);
  2. Press X to sign the homebrew: this will create a new file and rename the original to EBOOT_ORI.PBP;
  3. Go to any PSN PSP game you have on your Vita and copy the files EBOOT.PBP and __sce_ebootpbp to the folder of the homebrew you just created. I used the WizOrb mini as a base and it worked like a charm – that game is about 23MB.
  4. Reboot the Vita into recovery mode and rebuild database. When it comes back you will have the bubble(s) for each homebrew you did this on listed and working.
  5. To delete any bubble, just delete the folders in VitaShell and rebuild databases again.

As with last time, you can head to the /talk thread to discuss the release or head here if you want to help contribute to the list of compatible homebrew. Let’s keep hoping that the ReVITAlize competition brings us more applications and games that we can use, remember the competition only ends at the end of the month. You can still enter if you so desire!
